Stellenbosch Experience

Overview

Stellenbosch is a university town in South Africa's Western Cape province. It's surrounded by the vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg. The town's oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries. Cape Dutch architecture gives a sense of South Africa's Dutch colonial history, as do the Village Museum's period houses and garden.

Stellenbosch has a Mediterranean climate. The peak travel season (Nov–Apr) coincides with the warmest and driest months of the year. This is a time of outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking and winery tours. The Stellenbosch Wine Festival (Jan/Feb) is a chance to sample the region’s renowned wines and local cuisine.

Throughout the year, there are smaller wine and food festivals. The autumn (Mar–May) offers vivid foliage. In the winter (Jun–Aug), surrounding mountain peaks are sometimes snowcapped.
